Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) - or Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs) - create severe impairment in thinking, perception, and communication. The first symptoms generally show up in early childhood, and those with the disorder may exhibit a full spectrum of behaviors ranging from tantrums to nonresponsiveness. Autistic patients may be considered deaf, overemotional, or merely aloof, and can experience significant difficulties in forming and building relationships with others.
